It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Josef Marc, President of Filmic Technologies, this past week. His sudden loss is a heartbreaking shock to the Filmic family and the global preservation community he inspired.
Josef combined the heart of an artist with the vision of a technologist, creating breakthroughs in film preservation. As a musician’s son, he performed on stages worldwide before dedicating his life to protecting the world’s fragile audiovisual heritage. His journey took him behind the scenes of television, Olympic Games broadcasts, pioneering work in the fields of video and printed media preservation, and ultimately to leading Filmic Technologies.
Josef’s passion for safeguarding memory and culture was unmatched. Alarmed by the sheer volume of films decaying in archives and languages at risk of extinction, he personally reviewed over 10,000 films, each a piece of our human history. His work led to the creation of the FI16 which became Filmic’s EZ16 system, a revolutionary non-contact film inspection technology that digitizes archives at scale while protecting originals. Thanks to Josef’s vision, irreplaceable content—from Tasmania’s Aboriginal language collections to historic reels in Vietnam, Alaska, Mississippi, and beyond—are now safeguarded for future generations.
To those who knew him, Josef was more than a pioneer. He was a trusted guide and friend whose humility, kindness, and pursuit of excellence always inspired. He was just at ease watching turtles hatch on Florida beaches as he was playing on stage for thousands, and he carried that grace and attention to detail with him while leading the team in person and remotely. At Filmic, Josef was always there to pick up a bass while guiding in step with his project management principles. His legacy lives on in every preserved frame, every saved archive, and every partner touched by his mission.
