Frequently Asked Questions

HARDWARE

Can I use my own PC to operate EZ16?

EZ16 and EasyReel are designed and optimized for the Dell Precision 3930 Server that is included. Attempting to utilize other computer hardware is not supported.

Can I select external storage (external USB or NAS over ethernet) as my default save location?

Saving directly to external storage is not currently supported.

SOFTWARE

What are the native movie frame resolutions of EZ16?

In EasyReel 1.2.6, EZ16's 5MP camera allows for a native capture of ~720 lines high (depending on how well the lens is focused). EZ16's 24MP camera allows for a native capture of ~2100 lines high. These resolutions will improve over future updates to EasyReel, without the user needing to purchase new hardware.

During Preview/Inspection, the frame drifts/crawls up and down slowly. Is this a problem?

This is expected. The slight drift is due to the motors and tachometer constantly recalibrating based on the physical stretch and condition of the film. Over time, EasyReel has been updated to minimize the effect, and will continue to receive additional stability updates in the future.

Does EasyReel include additional features like color correction, software based stability control or dust and scratch removal, etc?

EZ16 and EasyReel are designed to enable collection holders the opportunity to scan their motion picture films as quickly as possible, providing access to the material, and allowing the digital assets to feed into their existing production and editing workflows.

SCANNING PREPARATION AND PROCESS

Do films need to be cleaned/prepared prior to scanning?

This depends on the needs of the operator/collection. EZ16 excels at providing access to a collection as quickly as possible, but if the operator is seeking to scan at preservation quality (4K and 12 Bit color), further cleaning and dust removal will likely be required.

How does EZ16 address dust removal?

Filmic Technologies is currently developing a set of PTRs (Particle Transfer Rollers) that can be installed in place of the rollers preceding the camera and will be available in the future.

Some of my films are scanning correctly while others are unstable (significant up/down drift, poor audio quality, etc). How can this be corrected?

When loading film, make sure that the appropriate film gauge and tension are selected, and then reposition/refocus the camera. If this issue persists, contact support@filmictech.com.

What speed should I run my film? Some of it is very damaged.

EZ16 and Easy Reel can accommodate speeds from 6fps to 60fps. Here are some recommended speeds, depending on desired use and condition:

  • Heavily Damaged or Brittle: 6fps

  • Lightly Damaged, twisted or wavy: 6fps - 18fps, depending on severity of damage

  • Good Condition (minimal damage), Preservation Quality: Up to 24fps - 48fps at 12 Bit Color

  • Good Condition, Access/Assessment Quality: Up to 60fps at 8 Bit Color

All films are unstable regardless of film gauge, camera position/focus, options selected, etc. What should I do?

Contact support@filmictech.com as soon as possible so that we can help diagnose the issue and prevent significant production downtime.
